What Items Are Not Allowed?

Skips and grab bags are a most efficient way for getting rid of most household and building waste, but for legal and/or practical reasons there are items and materials that cannot be put in a skip or grab and must be disposed of separately.

Putting such things in a skip could result us in charging you significantly more to dispose of the waste. However, by using the list below of the most popular items that will not be accepted by us, any issues can be resolved prior to booking. Please note this is just a guide.

Appliances

No appliances or electrical equipment like fridges, freezers, dishwashers or televisions can be put into a skip. All waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) must be taken to a registered WEEE recycling facility and cannot be mixed with other general waste. For WEEE disposal contact a specialist WEEE collection company or for additional guidance go to www.nidirect.gov.uk.

Gas Cylinders

We can not take gas cylinders, whether full or empty. Residual contents of a gas cylinder are potentially dangerous and we are not licensed to remove them. Try contacting the company who provided the gas cylinder as they are often happy to collect used cylinders for reuse and recycling. Tyres

Tyres are not permitted in our skips or grabs bags and need a specialist recycler to take them. Many appear of the internet so it will be easy to find those in your area.

Asbestos

Asbestos is not permitted to be placed in skips or grab bags as it is hazardous and harmful material. Laws are already in place which mean it's illegal to reuse and recycle any asbestos material, or to dispose of it improperly. Asbestos must be removed by a specialist asbestos removal contractor. Your local council should always be your first port of call – if they don't provide their own collection service, they will know of companies in your area that do. Alternatively go to www.gov.uk/asbestos-in-home.

Batteries

No type of battery, including car batteries can be put in any skip or garb bag as batteries contain various metals and chemicals which mean they must be treated separately. This includes small domestic batteries. Most supermarkets and some petrol stations provide battery recycling boxes. Alternatively, you can look for your closest battery recycling centre at batterypack.org. For car battery disposal ring your local garage for more advice.

Paints, Solvents, Liquids & Fuels

Paint, solvents and fuels all have a chemical makeup, and our license does not cover us to dispose of hazardous waste like this, therefore they cannot be placed in a skip or grab bag. Fluorescent lighting tubes contain mercury, a hazardous chemical, so they too cannot just be placed into your skip or grab bag. These items require proper, licensed disposal, and must be taken to waste plants authorised to deal with them. Medical Waste

Medical waste must not be disposed of any of our skips or grab bags – it risks infection and contamination, and needs to be dealt with by certain, licensed firms. Contact the Department of Health for guidance on the proper disposal of medical waste.

Plasterboard

Plasterboard and gypsum waste can be placed in our skips and grab bags BUT must not be mixed with any other waste.

Therefore, if you have other waste you will require 2 skips or grab bags to ensure plasterboard is kept separate.

Furniture & Upholstery Foam

We do not accept furniture or upholstery foam.
